The first recorded sighting of a manatee was in 1492, when Christopher Colombus spotted one and thought it was a mermaid! Since then, marine biologists have learned a lot about these majestic mammals. Just as intelligent as dolphins, they generally travel at a laid-back 5 mph, watching the world float by. Manatee's conservation status is currently 'threatened', but many scientists and environmentalists argue it should be 'endangered' due to the threats manatees face from habitat loss, pollution, and irresponsible fishing practices.
